How to Keep Your Pool the Perfect Temperature All Summer

Posted on Aug 20, 2014

Reaching the perfect pool temperature is a fine art. Even with hot summer sunshine, most pools don’t stay at a comfortable temperature without a water heater. Although heating can be expensive, it is a necessary element for people who want to enjoy their pool on a regular basis.

The Prime Temperature

Before diving into the different heating methods, pool owners need to know temperature facts to help them find the perfect balance. According to most swimming coaches, 78 degrees is appropriate for rigorous pool activities like competitive swimming and training exercise. However, families with young kids or older grandparents might consider bumping the temperature closer to 80 for optimum pool comfort.

Keeping the Balance

A water heater works hard to keep your pool’s temperature at the average you desire, but covering your pool at night will help maintain the warmth by preserving a few degrees of heat normally lost while you are sleeping. For pool owners interested in conserving some energy, covering the pool allows you to bump down the heater a few degrees.

Why is Heating Important?

Keeping your pool’s temperature warmer gives you a longer swimming season. Instead of only enjoying the pool for two months in mid-summer, start using it in late spring and keep swimming through September. A warm pool also makes swimming more enjoyable. For anyone suffering from joint or muscle disorders or simply wishing to maintain a form of exercise, swimming is an excellent option.

Go Green at the Pool

Water heaters of all types typically use large amounts of gas and energy for power. Many people are tempted to stay away from water heaters for this reason. Luckily, there are a few techniques to help you conserve energy and turn your pool heating plans into eco-friendly practices.

Studies show 78 degrees as the perfect temperature for maintaining comfort without over-using gas or energy. The water heater is still using fuel, but it keeps consumption at a low and steady rate. When the pool goes unused for a few days, shut off the water heater until you have plans to use it again. Utilize a quality pool cover to contain existing heat.

Keep a close eye on the thermometer to identify the prime temperature for your personal preferences. After noting the right temperature, leave a reminder by the thermostat to ensure the temperature doesn’t accidentally get bumped up.

To get the most out of your pool investment, experiment with various heating methods to pinpoint what temperature works for you.
