Prevent Pool Mistakes with These 4 Tips

Posted on Jun 3, 2014

Cars needs regular maintenance such as oil changes or new filters to keep them running properly. Yards needs proper care to keep them looking their best. Your backyard pool is no exception.

Water conditions can get out of control rather quickly in a backyard pool. Maybe you have unwanted pests floating around or algae creeping up the walls. Maintaining your pool’s beauty and functionality is a major part of enjoying summer in your own private backyard.

One option is to hire someone to handle the care for you, like Pools of Fun, but many pool owners prefer to tackle these tasks themselves. These tips will help you avoid common mistakes that can take away from the enjoyment of your pool:

  1. Over-treating. People often make the mistake of using too much chlorine, which can irritate your skin and eyes. Your backyard pool isn’t the big waterpark that sees hundreds of people on a daily basis. Keep a water test kit on hand to make sure your chlorine levels are high enough to keep your pool clean based on the number of people who use it, but not so high that it becomes intolerable.
  2. Filter checks. Like the filter on your furnace or air conditioner for the house, your pool’s filter needs to be checked regularly so is doesn’t become clogged. Help prevent clogging by skimming debris such as leaves, bugs and pet hair from the pool as often as possible.
  3. Algaecide. If you need to get rid of pests such as water boatmen, an algaecide will remove their food source, but must be used properly. These chemicals reduce your chlorine levels, making it important to add more. Be sure to allow it to circulate through your pool before treatment. Skip this step, and your pool will look worse if the chlorine levels drop too low.
  4. Pumps. Save money by periodically shutting off your pool’s pump. However, do so with caution; this can lead to problems if the water is not circulating through the filter to remove debris, leading to a chemical imbalance in your water.

Be mindful of these suggestions to keep your pool looking its best and lasting well into the future! Need help from Pools of Fun? Contact us today!
