What Pool Owners Need to Know Now About the Importance of Pool Covers

Did you know that a pool cover reduces your pool water evaporation by 90 to 95%? On average, pools without covers – average size being 18 feet x 36 feet – lose one inch of water every week during the summer. Annually, this equates to a water loss of 7,000 gallons! Astounding, isn’t it? Unless you are using chlorine gas and you’re concerned about gaseous exchange, you can safely cover a pool without any worries.

Additionally, it’s important to remember, a pool safety cover differs from a solar cover. A safety cover goes over the top of the pool and prevents access to the pool; it is also anchored into the pool deck. You could walk across it and not fall into the pool. A solar cover is designed solely to heat the pool and maintain that heat. It just lays across the pool and cannot hold weight. You could not walk across the top of it, as you could with a pool cover. You will not prevent the drowning pets and people with just a solar cover.

To protect your pool cover during the winter and extend the life of the cover, you will want to do the following:

  • Keep the cover clear of debris and excess water.

  • A small amount of water – 1/8” – should be left on the cover to keep the cover flat against the water’s surface and prevent the wind from lifting the cover.

  • If your pool is covered in a mesh cover or safety cover, the water level and chemical balance must be monitored monthly.

  • If you have a high precipitation level where you live, your pool’s water level could rise quickly and freeze, causing damage to the tile in a gunite (plaster) pool.

  • If you live in an area where your rain is normally acidic or alkaline, the water balance must be monitored closely to prevent staining and scaling of the pool lining.

  • You can cover a pool without being concerned about gaseous exchange, unless you are using chlorine gas. If you are using chlorine gas, you should let it air.
