When to Winterize Your Pool

Posted on Oct 20, 2022

The fall season is the best time to focus on preparing your pool to sit as the winter months approach. This form of pool prep is called “winterizing,” and it is the best way to make sure your pool is all set to withstand the cold weather that is to come.

Living in Indiana with our climate, it’s necessary to prep your pool for winter, and you can highly benefit from knowing the basics of winterization. If you are a homeowner and would like to have expert help from Pools of Fun winterizing your pool, we have technicians available to assist you with these services.

The Right Time

The end of summer — usually marked by Labor Day — is the ideal time to perform needed maintenance and close down your swimming pool. Scheduling a pool closing at the end of summer will allow for a thorough inspection after heavy use and help get your water in good condition while your pool is out of operation. Additionally, early winterization can help pool owners avoid damage that could lead to more costly maintenance when the pool is re-opened.

Make Sure Your Water Is Cleaned, Cooled, and Treated Before Covering

Before outside temperatures drop, you want to make sure your pool water is at the optimum temperature to sustain the chemicals that help maintain water quality throughout the winter months. If the water is too warm, there’s a chance that the chemicals won’t last, leading to expensive repairs. Most pool experts recommend waiting until your pool water falls below 65 degrees Fahrenheit, or 18 degrees Celsius, before placing it under a cover to prevent overheating and bacteria issues associated with algae growth.

If you do not keep your pool covered during the colder months, winterizing your pool should include monitoring nearby trees. If you don’t, it can lead to leaves and other matter ending up inside your pool.

Once your pool is properly cleaned, inspected, and treated, you can relax while knowing that your swimming pool is properly winterized. If you notice any drastic changes in water temperature or quality after your pool is winterized, reach out to professionals for an assessment.
